JAKARTA - The high-level conference moment (KTT) of thearchipelagic and Island States (AIS) Forum 2023 is an opportunity for DKI Jakarta to show seriousness in dealing with plastic waste on the coast of the province.

"Showing the people of coastal countries and archipelagic countries the future plans that will be carried out by the DKI government to overcome and also at the same time improve coastal ecosystems damaged by waste," said Secretary Advisor for Climate and Environmental Governance, AIS Program Manager Abdul Wahib Situmorang as reported by ANTARA, Monday, September 25.

According to him, the plans owned by DKI can be an inspiration and can be learned for archipelagic countries that take part in the conference.

He said Indonesia as the initiator of the AIS Forum has an approach by example (leading) andwalk the talk (making according to words), so that the commitment of this nation to reduce plastic waste by 70 percent by 2025 can be an inspiration for other countries.

"It can inspire many other island and archipelago countries to improve the coastal ecosystem of waste, it is very possible," said Abdul.

Contacted separately, Head of the Center for Coastal and Oceanal Resources Studies, IPB University, Yonvitner, emphasized the high urgency of plastic waste management in the marine ecosystem.

"Increasing plastic waste can lead to lowering the quality of the environment, ecosystem, and humans," said Yonvitner.

According to him, plastic waste can interfere with the ecological process and the production of biomass from dishes, fish, and also have an impact on health. As a result, it will reduce the carrying capacity and economy of affected resources.

The DKI Jakarta Provincial Government has taken various steps to deal with waste on the coast, including in Muara Angke. In July 2023, the DKI Provincial Government has cleaned up waste and also built garbage barriers in the area.

In addition, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) has also installed a net system in rivers to reduce the generation of garbage entering the sea.

The AIS Forum Summit this year carries the theme Collaborating, Proposing Innovation for the Sea and the Future of Together(Fostering Collaboration, Enabling Innovation for Our Ocean and Our Future).

The main purpose of this conference is to strengthen the collaboration of member countries in overcoming global problems with four main areas, namely climate change mitigation and adaptation, blue economy, handling plastic waste at sea, and good maritime governance.
