JAKARTA - Five Palestinians were reportedly killed in an alleged accidental explosion while protesting on the Israeli border - the Gaza Strip.

The explosion on Wednesday came as dozens of Gaza youths staged protests, in support of Palestinians imprisoned in Israel.

The Palestinian factions' umbrella groups said the explosion was caused by a tool planned to be used by several protesters during the demonstration.

Five people have died, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said, as reported by The National News September 14.

Separately, the Israeli military said protesters tried to throw it at its troops across the border.

Meanwhile, the Highest National Committee for Palestinian Prisoners said they would delay plans for a hunger strike in Israeli prisons, which is scheduled to begin on Thursday.

"We made the decision after the prison administration lifted its decision on the inmates to reduce the visits of prisoners' families to their children in prison," the committee said.

Earlier, Israel's National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir recently limited the visit of prisoners' families to once every two months, from the current provisions once a month.

The International Red Cross Committee (ICRC) has asked Israel to respect the rights of Palestinian prisoners in accordance with international law.

"Under international humanitarian law, Palestinian prisoners are protected people and have the right to touch their families. This includes family visits while in detention," explained the ICRC.
