YOGYAKARTA - The Yogyakarta City Government has prepared waste processing facilities with environmentally friendly technology that can process around 60 tons of waste per day.

Acting Mayor of Yogyakarta Singgih Raharjo said that waste processing facilities using environmentally friendly technology are targeted to be operational by the end of 2023.

"It is hoped that by the end of 2023 or early 2024 it will be able to operate, processing 60 tonnes (of waste) per day," said Singgih as reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, September 12.

"This will be environmentally friendly, the process then involves destroying waste using very high technology, (in) the process the temperature is up to 1,500 degrees Celsius," he said.

Singgih explained that the Yogyakarta City Government is exploring collaboration with investors in utilizing waste processing technology devices.

"Full investment from them. The model is that we pay a tipping fee, so we pay for the waste," he said.

Singgih has not provided a detailed explanation regarding the plan to provide waste processing with environmentally friendly technology, including the location of the facilities and the output of the waste processing.

He only said that waste sorting activities from the source are very important to make efficient use of organic and inorganic waste processing technological equipment.

"Sortification at waste processing locations takes quite a lot of time, so sorting waste from the source helps further waste processing," he said.

Singgih said that the city government is carrying out various efforts from upstream to downstream to overcome the waste problem in Yogyakarta City.

According to him, Yogyakarta already has 14 depots and three waste storage sites ready to accept residual waste from residents as well as more than 23,000 biopores which are estimated to be able to reduce waste by up to 50 tons per day.

"This month we will also do it with some stimulus, assistance, regional in nature. We will mobilize it in sub-districts. We will copy and modify several existing models (of waste management) according to regional conditions," he said.
