Tens Of Thousands Of Prisoners In North Sumatra Get Remission For Indonesian Independence

The celebration of the 78th Indonesian Independence Day today is a special day for tens of thousands of prisoners in North Sumatra (North Sumatra).

The Regional Office of the Ministry of Law and Human Rights (Kemenkumham) of North Sumatra gave remissions to 20,163 prisoners (Napi) in prisons/Rutans throughout North Sumatra on the 78th Anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia.

"The number of prisoners who received general remission (RU) in 2023, based on the type, namely RU I (Party General Remission) as many as 19,609 people and RU II (General Remission of All) as many as 554 people," said Head of the Correctional Division of the North Sumatra Ministry of Law and Human Rights Regional Office Rudy Fernando Sianturi, in a statement received on Thursday.

Rudy mentioned the requirements for prisoners and children who have the right to receive General Remission on August 17, 2023, namely good behavior while serving a sentence of at least three months.

For general crimes, a minimum of three months must be calculated from the date of detention until August 17, 2023 and not 18 years old.

"Not currently undergoing disciplinary action in the last three months, starting before the date of granting remission. Has participated in the coaching program organized by LPKA with good predicate," he said, quoted from ANTARA.

He said the amount of general remission on August 17 in 2023 given was that prisoners who had served six months to 12 months received a one-month reduction.

Children who have served three months to 12 months have received a one-month reduction.

"Napi and children who have been sentenced to 12 months or more get a two-month reduction," he said.

The Head of the Correctional Division added that the number of adult prisoners and prisoners in prisons/Rutans throughout North Sumatra on August 16, 2023 was 31,921 people, with details of male prisoners as many as 24,050 people, female prisoners as many as 1,029 people, male prisoners as many as 6,564 people, and 278 female prisoners.

"The number of prisoners and prisoners living in prisons/Rutans throughout North Sumatra on August 16, 2023 was 311 people, with details of male prisoners as many as 199 people, two female prisoners, 108 male prisoners, and two female prisoners," concluded Rudy.
