Defeating Motion Not To Believe, Indian Prime Minister Modi Promises Peace In Manipur

JAKARTA - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised his government would find a solution to the crisis in Manipur, bringing peace to states that have been hit by ethnic violence for the past 100 days, after defeating the motion of not believing in yesterday's majority vote.

PM Modi spoke on the third day of a vote of distrust in parliament against the Bharatiya Janata Party Government (BJP), for its inability to control deadly violence in the northeastern state, which has so far killed at least 180 people and left more than 60,000 people homeless.

"People are facing problems, many people have lost their family members, serious crimes have been committed against women," PM Modi said in his more than two-hour closing speech.

"I want to assure you that those who are guilty will not be forgiven. The central and state governments are making every effort," he continued.

"I want to tell the women, girls, sisters from Manipur, this nation stands with you. We will together find a solution to this crisis and peace will happen again," said PM Modi.

"I guarantee that in Manipur, all efforts will be made to accelerate the pace of Manipur's development," he said.

It is known that the motion of distrust was initiated by an alliance of opposition parties newly formed in the name of INDIA last week, accusing PM Modi's government of remaining silent over continuing violence, although tens of thousands of security forces have been deployed in the region.

Manipur, which borders Myanmar, is ruled by BJP led by PM Modi.

This is the first time he has spoken of ethnic violence in this northeastern state. In addition, this is the second untrusted motion against PM Modi since his party came to power in 2014.
