Malaysia Begins A Series Of State Elections

JAKARTA - Malaysia started a series of general elections in six states by carrying out the nomination day for council members who will compete for 245 seats in parliament.

The proposers, supporters and candidates for council members who will fight in the general election of the state will hand over registration forms to officers at 173 Candidate Centers (PPC) from 09.00 to 10.00 local time.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, who is a member of the Tambun parliament, Perak, also accompanied the candidates for council members from the coalition of pairing parties for the Council (DUN) of Sungai Tua, Hulu Kelang and Gombak Setia to the registration venue in Gombak, Selangor.

Anwar together with Premier Sarawak, Chairman of the Minister of Sabah and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia also walked along with hundreds of supporters of candidates for council members from the pairing parties.

Some of them wore basic red and blue party shirts.

Furthermore, they went to the Selayang and Ampang areas to provide support to other candidates for council members.

Secretary of the Malaysian General Elections Commission (SPR) Indera Ikmalrudin Ishak in his statement said that the registration of candidates for council members in the 15th general election of the DUN (PRU DUN) and small general elections (PRK) for the Kuala Terengganu Parliament was carried out by candidates, one proposer and supporters. Or by only proposers and supporters, or one of them to be able to enter the PPC.

In the regulations issued by the SPR, in accordance with the 1954 Election Violation Act, the public and supporters of candidates for council members are prohibited from waiting or being within 50 meters of the PPC limit set.

The campaign period in six states will last only 14 days from July 29 to August 11, 23.59 pm. The initial voting will take place on August 8, while voting day is set for August 12.

The total number of voters registered in elections in six states reached 9,773,571 people. They will vote in 3,450 polling stations.
