JAKARTA - Two protesters burned a copy of the Qur'an, a Muslim holy book, in front of the Iraqi Embassy in the Danish capital on Monday, which risks exacerbating relations between the two countries.

The two protesters came from a group calling themselves "Danish Patriots", which held a similar demonstration last week and broadcasted the incident live on Facebook.

Protesters on Monday in Copenhagen trampled on the Qur'an and burned it with tin paper beside the Iraqi flag on the ground.

Protests have flared up in Iran and Iraq, after Denmark and Sweden allowed the burning of the Koran under rules that protect free speech. Protesters in Iraq set fire to the Swedish Embassy in Baghdad on Thursday.

Several thousand Iraqis demonstrated in Baghdad on Saturday in connection with arson in two Nordic countries, in a demonstration held by ruling Iraqi parties and armed groups, most of whom are close to Iran.

Separately, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Saturday, people tarnishing the Koran must face "the most severe punishment".
