Extortion Practices At KPK Detention Center Allegedly Since 2018, But Not Completely Investigated

JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) said that allegations of illegal levies at the East Jakarta Class I Detention Center, Red and White House branch, are nothing new. It is suspected that this practice has been going on since 2018.

"The alleged fraudulent practice has been suspected for a long time, even suspected since 2018," said Head of the News Department, Ali Fikri, to journalists in a written statement, Monday, July 3.

However, Ali said that this incident had never been investigated under the previous leadership. "There have been several similar incidents," he stressed.

"However, action has not been completed," continued Ali.

Deputy Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Committee, Nurul Ghufron, also said something similar. However, they only found out because the prisoner didn't want to be honest.

"This has been going on for a long time but it has only been revealed now, because in previous investigations the previous victims and their families were still secretive or did not reveal anything," said Ghufron in his written statement, Friday, June 23.

This extortion is thought to be aimed at giving detainees at the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) detention centers such as being allowed to carry communication devices. In fact, this is something that is prohibited according to statutory regulations.

"It is suspected that his actions took the form of bribery, gratification and extortion of KPK detainees to obtain leniency and use of communication equipment," said Ghufron.

Previously, the KPK Supervisory Board discovered allegations of illegal levies at the KPK Detention Center. The value is fantastic, reaching IDR 4 billion and will be carried out from December 2021-March 2022.

Based on these findings, Acting Deputy for Enforcement and Execution of the Corruption Eradication Commission, Asep Guntur, said that an investigation is currently underway. Anyone involved will be brushed indiscriminately.
