JAKARTA - The Kremlin on Tuesday said Germany's involvement in the war in Ukraine increased day by day, insisting that if Berlin had no way of ensuring the weapons it had provided for Ukraine would not be used to attack Russian territory.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said German-suppressed weapons had been used in the Donbas region, which Russia has declared its territory, a move that is considered illegal by Ukraine and the West.

Earlier, Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Monday Germany had insisted, like other NATO member countries, that weapons it supplied to Ukraine should not be used to attack Russian territory.

However, Peskov told reporters: "First, Germany has no way to confirm it," reported Reuters on May 2. Second, the weapons supplied by Germany to the Kyiv regime have opened fire on Russian territory, because Donbas is Russian territory," Peskov said.

Peskov further emphasized that Germany's "direct or indirect involvement" in the conflict was increasing.

"The German chancellor must use it as a starting point," he said.

It is known that two regions in eastern Ukraine, collectively known as Donbas, Lugansk and Donetsk, have been the focus of fighting between Ukraine and Russia or Russian-backed forces since 2014.

Russia unilaterally annexed the two regions last year, along with two other Ukrainian territories, Kherson and Zaporizhia (south), although they have not fully controlled both regions.
