JAKARTA - The White House on Wednesday welcomed the telephone conversation between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky, but said it was too early to say whether the talks would result in a peace deal between Russia and Ukraine.
"That's a good thing," White House national security spokesman John Kirby said of the call, reported by Reuters, April 27.
"Now, whether that will lead to a meaningful peace movement, or a plan, or a proposal, I don't think we know at this point," continued the retired two-star United States Navy.
Earlier, President Xi spoke by phone on Wednesday with President Zelensky for the first time since Russia's invasion of Ukraine last year. This phone call comes after months of pressure from Kyiv to carry out the talks.
President Xi told President Zelensky China will send a special representative to Ukraine and hold talks with all parties who want peace, Chinese state media reported.
"We have said for a long time that we want this war to end," said the man who started his military career in 1986.
"This war can end soon if Putin wants to leave. It doesn't look like it will happen soon," he said.
"If there is going to be a negotiated peace, it should be done when President Zelenskiy is ready for it," Kirby added, adding that the United States would welcome "any attempt to achieve a just peace as long as that peace is ... sustainable, and can trusted."
