JAKARTA - Canadian police arrested and charged a man after what they called an alleged "hate incident" at a mosque in the Province of Ontario last Thursday, in which he allegedly drove towards a worshiper and shouted threats and religious insults, police said on Sunday.

The incident took place in the City of Markham while the suspect, 28-year-old Sharan Karunakaran, was later arrested in Toronto, York County Police said in a statement.

The Islamic Society of Markham (ISM) said someone had entered a mosque in Markham, 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) north of Toronto, on Thursday and allegedly tore up a Koran and complained to worshipers.

However, the police statement released on Sunday did not mention the torn Koran.

This incident occurred in the middle of the Holy Month of Ramadan, when worshipers thronged the mosque. It is known, thousands of people thronged the mosque in Markham.

Canadian Commerce Minister Mary Ng condemned the incident, calling it a hate crime, saying it had no place in Canadian society.

"This violence and Islamophobia has no place in our society," said Minister Mary Ng who is also a member of the local parliament, in a reaction to the incident.

Police added that they charged the suspect with threats, assault with a weapon and driving in a dangerous condition. His next hearing is scheduled for the Ontario Superior Court in Newmarket on Tuesday.
