JAKARTA - The children of Prince Harry of England and his wife Meghan rightfully bear the titles prince and princess, with the couple publicly using their daughter's royal title for the first time when announcing that she had been baptized.

Under royal rules, the king's grandchildren can become a royal prince or princess, meaning Harry's children Archie (3) and Lilibet (1) have been entitled to use the title since his grandfather became king last September.

Attention to Harry's children's titles comes after his relationship with his father, King Charles III, hit a low after his memoir earlier this year, in which he made accusations against the royal family.

As of Wednesday, it was not known whether the couple, who stepped back from royal duties in March 2020 and now live in California, United States, wanted their child to be known as prince and princess.

"I can confirm that Princess Lilibet Diana was baptized on Friday, March 3 by the Archbishop of Los Angeles, the Reverend John Taylor," a spokesman for the couple said on Wednesday, reported Reuters March 9.

The baptism came days after Harry and Meghan were asked to vacate their English home, Frogmore Cottage, a decision made by Charles, marking the latest strain in the relationship.

Buckingham Palace said it would update the royal website to reflect Archie and Lilibet's titles at the "appropriate time".

Meanwhile, Meghan said in an interview two years ago that the British royal family refuses to make her son Archie a prince and talk about how dark his skin is.

The title follows the precedent set by a letter patent issued by George V in 1917 conferring the title of prince or princess on a grandson of the sovereign. This is the first time it has been confirmed that children will use the title.

It is not known whether Harry will attend his father's coronation in May.
