BNPB: Indonesian Fault Seismicity Research Must Be Activated

JAKARTA - The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has appealed that fault seismic research in Indonesia must be activated frequently.

Acting Head of the Center for Disaster Data, Information, and Communication, BNPB, Abdul Muhari, said that reflecting on the Cianjur earthquake, West Java, apparently it was not from the Cimandiri fault which had been suspected from the start.

"There are new faults that have not even been identified before. This means that indeed, earth research, fault seismic research, and active faults must be activated frequently," Abdul said as reported by ANTARA, Tuesday, February 28.

Apart from that, BNPB also appealed to be vigilant in the south of Jakarta, where there is still a potential for faults which if seen in the air, are now invisible because there are already full of settlements.

According to Abdul, this is a challenge to be able to really see and prepare the right conditions and mitigation efforts for the potential for the next earthquake to recur.

In addition, regarding seismicity in Indonesia, there are no areas that are truly not prone to earthquakes, except for a small part of Kalimantan and the south.

According to him, the solution is to make buildings earthquake-resistant. However, the biggest challenge is when a building that has been built cannot be ascertained whether it complies with earthquake-resistant regulations.
