JAKARTA - The tidal flood submerged dozens of homes of coastal residents of Kampung Bugis Village, Tanjungpinang City, Riau Islands Province (Kepri).
The flood, which was triggered by sea water, rose to the surface plus light rainfall, it also submerged a number of roads in the village.
A resident of Bugis Village, Mira, admitted that her entire house was flooded, so a number of household furniture and cooking utensils were submerged in seawater.
"I and the children were forced to evacuate to Grandma's house first, while waiting for water dry," she said, as quoted from Antara, Wednesday, August 25.
Another Bugis Village resident, Rio, said that his house was also flooded with tidal waves from the kitchen to the living room.
According to him, the tidal flood conditions this time are not as usual, even considered as the biggest expected to hit Bugis Village in the last decades.
"Indeed, tidal flooding often occurs here because it is surrounded by the sea. But, it was never this big that it submerged the house and its contents," said Rio.
Until now, the tidal flood is still submerging houses and roads in Bugis Village even though the water discharge is starting to shrink. Rain with light intensity is still pouring down the coastal area.
BMKG Tanjungpinang forecaster Khalid Fikri Nugraha said that the tidal flood in the coastal area of Bugis Village was triggered by increased seawater due to the last few days the weather conditions had rained quite intensively, plus the wave ranged from 0.5 to 2.0 meters.
His party asked the community to evacuate to a safer place, if the sea level rises it could have a significant impact in the next few days.

"It is estimated that in the next week it will still rain, especially on Bintan Island," he said.
