Cianjur Prison Wall Collapses Due to M 5.6 Earthquake

JAKARTA - An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 rocked Cianjur, West Java. The earthquake shaking caused the fence of the Cianjur Correctional Institution (Lapas) to collapse.

Based on a video from a VOI source, the Cianjur prison wall is directly adjacent to a residential area. The building collapsed so that there were no barriers in some areas.

In addition to the walls, the guard post was also affected by the earthquake. Several officers were also at the site of the damage.

After the earthquake occurred, the prisoners or inmates were gathered in one of the fields in the Cianjur prison area. They were given information and advice not to panic.

Now Cianjur Prison is operating as usual. The prisoners have returned to the cells.

The M 5.6 Cianjur earthquake occurred at 13.21 WIB on Monday, November 21. Several houses, offices, Islamic boarding schools, and public facilities were damaged.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported nine aftershocks after the first.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) recorded 14 people died due to the Cianjur earthquake as of Monday, November 21 afternoon.

Recently, information obtained by the Governor of West Java, Ridwan Kamil, stated that the death toll from the Cianjur earthquake rose to 46 people.

"The earthquake that occurred this afternoon destroyed many buildings and according to the Regent's report up to 16.00, there were 46 fatalities and 700 injured", said Ridwan Kamil via his Instagram account @ridwankamil, Monday, November 21.
