JAKARTA - Complications from diabetes can cause diabetic neuropathy, a disorder of the peripheral nerves found in people with diabetes mellitus.

This was conveyed by a neurologist, Rizaldy Taslim Pinzon, from the Indonesian Neurologist Association (PERDOSI).

"Many diseases cause neuropathy, one of which can be prevented is diabetes," said Rizaldy in Jakarta, Antara, Wednesday, November 9.

He explained that neuropathy is common, where one in two or one in three patients with diabetes mellitus has neuropathy. Peripheral nerve damage can affect the sensory or taste nervous system, the motor nervous system, the autonomic nervous system, or a combination of the three nervous systems.

When diabetes can be prevented or controlled early, neurological disorders may be corrected if they are not severe. However, it is difficult to happen when the nerve fiber damage is more than 50 percent which is called the "point of no return".

"If the damage is more than 50 percent of the nerve fibers it will be difficult (normal)," he said.

Numbness, tingling, stinging, and a burning or burning sensation in the hands and feet are common symptoms of neuropathy that can affect a patient's quality of life.

If the symptoms occur continuously and the intensity is increasing, immediately consult a doctor so that they can be treated further.

"Neuropathy can be treated better if found early, better check now," he said.

One effort that can be done is to take neurotropic B vitamins which have been shown to be effective in reducing the symptoms of diabetic neuropathy by 66 percent based on the 2018 NENOIN Clinical Study.

Based on the 2018 NENOIN Clinical Study, taking one tablet containing Vitamin B1 (100mg), B6 (100mg), and B12 (5000mg) in addition to effectively reducing neuropathy symptoms, has also been shown to be safe for long-term use by people with diabetes.

In addition to diabetics, neuropathy is at risk from the elderly, people with a family history of neuropathy, hypertension, smokers, consuming alcohol, people with vascular diseases, cancer patients, to people exposed to chemicals.

P&G Health Indonesia launched the first neuropathy risk assessment application in Indonesia called Neurometer and the "Life Free Without Numbness and Tingling" campaign supported by the Ministry of Health and the Indonesian Endocrinology Association (PERKENI).
