BMKG: 7 Kilometer Shallow Earthquake Shakes Bombana in Southeast Sulawesi

KENDARI - A shallow earthquake with a depth of 7 kilometers rocked the Rumbia sub-district, Bombana district in Southeast Sulawesi, Tuesday at 22:52 WITA.

Head of the Kendari Geophysics Station, Rudin, said the 4.0 magnitude earthquake was located at coordinates 4.80 South Latitude and 121.98 East Longitude.

"By taking into account the location of the epicenter and the depth of the hypocenter, the earthquake that occurred was a shallow earthquake caused by local fault activity in Southwest Rumbia, Bombana", he said in a written statement received in Kendari, Antara, Tuesday, October 21.

According to the Kendari Geophysics Station, the earthquake was centered about 8.2 kilometers southwest of Rumbia, Bombana on a scale of III to IV MMI.

On the MMI scale III, the vibrations are felt in the house and the vibrations are felt as if a truck was passing. While on a scale of IV MMI is felt by many people both inside and outside the house, windows and doors vibrate due to vibration.

Even so, he said, until now there have been no reports of the impact of damage caused by the earthquake. The modeling results show that the earthquake has no potential for a tsunami.

"As of 23.20 WITA, the results of BMKG monitoring show that aftershocks have not occurred", he explained.

Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG) appealed to the public to remain calm and not be influenced by issues that cannot be justified and to avoid cracked or damaged buildings caused by the earthquake.

"Check and make sure the building where you live is earthquake-resistant enough, or there is no damage due to earthquake vibrations that endanger the stability of the building before you return to the house", said Rudin.
