JAKARTA - The heir to the throne of the Netherlands, Princess Catharina-Amalia, has been placed under tight security after officials received information that she may be the target of kidnapping.

Originally, the 18-year-old Princess was moving into shared student accommodation at the University of Amsterdam, where she began studying politics, psychology, law, and economics earlier this month.

However, officials have intercepted security warnings that raise concerns the princess may be at the center of an attack or attempt of kidnapping.

Last year, security was stepped up around Prime Minister Mark Rutte, for fear he too was being targeted.

Famous Dutch kingpin Ridouan Taghi is said to be behind the alleged kidnap plot. However, this was immediately denied by Taghi on Wednesday, calling it a false and baseless accusation.

His lawyer, Inez Weski, said Taghi "strongly" denied the claims, saying he had made it clear he "didn't want to hurt Princess Amalia" and he "would never harm a child," reported The National News on September 22.

Taghi was arrested in Dubai in 2019, facing trial for several murders in the Netherlands.

He was accused by prosecutors of plotting a violent prison break, as well as ordering the murder and other criminal acts from his cell.

Taghi, along with 16 others, is suspected of being part of a criminal group known as the 'Mocro Mafia', accused of murder and attempted murder.

She is currently being held in a tight security establishment in Vught, where military personnel has been recruited to help guard her.

Princess Amalia accompanied her parents King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima to the official opening of parliament on Tuesday.
