JAKARTA - The price of one of the basic commodities, chicken eggs, has increased in many areas. But the Minister of Trade Zulkifli Hasan said, the increase in the price of chicken eggs should not be a fuss.

In Yogyakarta, the price of chicken eggs touched the highest price throughout 2022, reaching IDR 30,000 per kilogram.

"In the last few days, the price of chicken eggs has increased to IDR 30,000 per kilogram and this is the highest price so far this year," said the Head of the Availability of Trade Supervision and Control at the Yogyakarta City Trade Office, Riswanti, as quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, August 24.

According to her, the increase in the price of purebred chicken eggs does not only occur in the traditional markets of Yogyakarta City, but occurs evenly throughout the DIY region.

One of the factors that are estimated to be the cause of the increase in the price of broiler eggs, continued Riswanti, is the decline in chicken egg production in farmers plus the receipt of PKH funds and social assistance from the government so that farmers also increase product prices.

"Because the social assistance funds have fallen, the egg commodity has been bought from the coop or from the breeder so that it affects prices in traditional markets," she said, adding that the price of broiler eggs in modern markets or supermarkets has also increased.

The increase in the price of chicken eggs also occurred in Jakarta. The price of chicken eggs sold at Kramat Jati Market, East Jakarta, has increased to reach IDR 31 thousand per kilogram.

One of the chicken egg traders, Ati said, the price increase has occurred since the last week. She said the price increase was due to the lack of supply from livestock.

"Many consumers complain why the price is so expensive," said Ati, quoted by ANTARA, Tuesday, August 23.

Ati added that the increase in the price of chicken eggs had an effect on the sales turnover it received.

Two weeks earlier, the price of chicken eggs at Kramat Jati Market was still in the range of IDR 28,000 per kilogram, but last week it rose 7 percent to IDR 30,000, and now it is IDR 31,000 per kilogram.

Ati admitted that she experienced a decrease in sales turnover of up to 25 percent compared to the previous time when the price of chicken eggs was still normal, which was in the range of IDR 25 thousand.

"Yes, hopefully, the price can go down soon so that consumers can buy again," said Ati.

Dian, one of the food stall owners, admitted that she objected to the increase in the price of chicken eggs which reached IDR 31 thousand per kilogram.

Because, this can affect the food stall business. Now she was forced to reduce the portion of the menu that uses eggs.

"If we increase the price, it's a pity for consumers. We can only reduce the portion," said Dian.

The Trade Minister Says Don't Make a fuss

Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan said that the increase in the price of chicken eggs should not be a fuss. Compared to the price of eggs, Zulkifli chose to discuss a memorandum of understanding on a trade agreement made by the Ministry of Trade in India worth US$ 3.2 billion.

"Oh, it's a small increase in the price of chicken eggs, don't worry about it. The trade agreement with India worth US$ 3.2 billion was written," said Zulkifli in the hall of the Ministry of Trade, Jakarta, as quoted by VOI from Katadata.
