Two Russian Fighter Jets Enter Finnish Territory For 2 Minutes 1 Km Length

JAKARTA - I don't know what the two Russian MiG-31 fighter pilots mean. But losing direction alias stray seems impossible.

Two Russian MiG-31s were detected in violation of Finnish airspace. It happened Thursday, August 18 near the coastal town of Porvoo on the Gulf of Finland, Finland's defense ministry said.

The alleged breach occurred at 0640 GMT. The fighter jet flew west and was in Finnish airspace for two minutes.

"The depth of the alleged infringement into Finnish airspace is 1 km," the ministry said.

But there is no explanation, the plane was ejected or went out on its own.

The Finnish air force identified the plane and the Border Guard has launched an investigation into the violation, the ministry statement added.

Earlier, Russia's defense ministry said it had relocated three MiG-31E fighters equipped with Kinzhal hypersonic missiles to the Kaliningrad region, an exclave of Russia's Baltic coast between Poland and Lithuania.

The incident of the Russian military entering Finland is not new. In early May, Russian Mi-17 helicopters entered Finnish airspace twice on the same day.

However, it said that the incident was not considered a serious offense.

The investigation found that the helicopter entered Finnish airspace twice over a distance of several hundred meters twice on the morning of May 4, while on a routine patrol near the border.

The helicopter flew about 700 meters over the Finnish border near Kitee, and about 500 meters near Rautjärvi.

"The deviation was brief, and the helicopter returned to Russian airspace on its own initiative," the Border Guard said in a press release.
