No Safety Standards, Odong-Odong Cars Are Prohibited From Passing On Public Roads

TULUNGAGUNG - The Traffic Unit of the Tulungagung Police, East Java, has banned all types of odong-odong cars or rabbit trains from operating on public roads, due to their minimal safety standards.

"We will start socializing this to prevent the risk of accidents that can cause fatalities for users and other motorists," said Tulungagung Police Traffic Head, Police Commissioner Adjutant Rahandy, quoting Antara, Monday, August 1.

However, if tourist transportation facilities for families operate in tourist areas, they still allow it. Therefore, the owner of the odong-odong will be gathered and briefed.

They will be asked to sign a memorandum of understanding that the use of odong-odong is only allowed in tourist attractions.

"So the point is that we will build it first, we don't just hit it," he said.

Separately confirmed, the Head of the Tulungagung Galih Nusantara Transportation Service will communicate with the Traffic Unit.

He admits that some odong-odong have gone off limit, which should only be at tourist sites, but are now freely milling about on public streets.

"We will inform again where the operation is, tourist locations or locations that do not interfere with other road users," he explained.

According to Galih, the level of security for odong-odong is only allowed in tourist attractions, not on public roads. "If it's on public roads, it's clearly dangerous," he said.
