JAKARTA - Government Spokesperson for Handling COVID-19, Prof. Wiku Adisasmito, stated that the weekly trend of positive COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose again, which was 31 percent.

"It should be noted that there has been an upward trend in positive cases over the past three weeks and active cases over the past four days. If you look at the weekly positive case chart, there was an increase of 571 or 31 percent", said Wiku as quoted by Antara, Wednesday, June 8.

According to task force data on May 22, 2022, there were 1,814 positive cases, but now it has increased to 2,385 cases.

Daily active cases also experienced an increase of 328 cases or 10 percent. From the daily active cases reported on June 2, 2022, namely 3,105 cases, now it has increased to 3,433 cases.

Wiku added that five provinces contributed to the highest increase in COVID-19 cases in the past week, namely DKI Jakarta (30 percent), Banten (38 percent), West Java (18 percent), and DI Yogyakarta (45 percent), and East Java (37 percent).

The cause of the increase in cases is thought to have occurred due to community social activities which began to return to normal over time.

"This is important to watch out for considering that for approximately three months in a row since the Omicron wave, we have managed to keep cases stable", said Wiku.

However, the increase in cases was not followed by the severity of hospital bed occupancy (BOR) or the increase in weekly deaths due to COVID-19.

The five provinces also did not show an increase in death cases, only DI Yogyakarta experienced an increase from one death case to three cases in the last week. Meanwhile, BOR is still maintained below three percent.

The increase in cases is still under control, but Wiku emphasizes that all parties are aware of the upward trend. Local governments must continue to monitor and mitigate various things that can open up the potential for wider transmission.

An evaluation of the applicable policies and regulations is also needed to protect the community in a safe and healthy condition for their activities.

Meanwhile, for the community, Wiku asked not to get involved in the euphoria of normal activities because transmission can still occur.

The public is advised to remain disciplined in implementing health protocols and immediately check themselves if they feel symptoms of COVID-19.

“Immediately consult a doctor if you feel unwell or have symptoms of COVID-19. It is also requested for the whole community to immediately vaccinate the third dose for those who have not, to further increase the community's immunity. Remember! Health protocols are the key to success in the period of economic recovery and community activities", said Wiku.
