JAKARTA - United States President Joe Biden signed a law to strengthen support for Ukraine, in the face of the Russian invasion that took place on February 24 last.

Named as Ukraine's Democracy Defense Borrow-Lease Act of 2022, this policy will cut short the long process of sending weapons aid to Kyiv to fight Russia.

"This afternoon, I signed the Ukrainian Democracy Defense Lease Act of 2022 into law. This bill provides another important tool in our efforts to support Ukraine and its people in their struggle to defend their country and democracy against Putin's brutal war," wrote President Biden on the official Twitter account @POTUS, as quoted May 10.

"The cost of fighting is not cheap, but giving in to aggression is more expensive," added President Biden, citing CNBC.

The signing of the Ukrainian Democratic Defense Borrowing-Lending Act of 2022 will make it easier for the US to lend or lease military aid to allies affected by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Previously, President Biden already had the power to lend or lease equipment, but a law he is about to sign into law will ease some of the requirements to do so.

Under these new provisions, Ukraine can efficiently request transfers of US arms and other security assistance. The US will get a guarantee that the country will replace or replace the asset at a later date.

While citing CNA from AFP, President Biden also signaled he was ready to make political concessions in Congress so he could win quick approval of another $33 billion in funding to support Ukraine.

"We cannot delay this vital war effort," he said in a statement.

Separately, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed the move in a post on Twitter.

"The signing of the law on lending and borrowing today is a historic step. I am sure that we will win together again. And we will maintain democracy in Ukraine. And in Europe. Like 77 years ago," he wrote.
