JAKARTA - President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) has been urged to immediately inaugurate the General Election Commission (KPU)-Election Supervisory Body (Bawaslu) commissioners for the 2022-2027 period. The reason is that preparations for the 2024 General Election have started this year.

Responding to the urging, Deputy IV Presidential Chief of Staff (KSP) Juri Ardiantoro, an elected KPU-Bawaslu member will be inaugurated on April 11, 2022. This time coincides with the end of the tenure of KPU-Bawaslu members for the 2017-2022 period.

The jury emphasized that accelerating the time of the inauguration would violate the provisions, because the KPU and Bawaslu hold a 5-year term.

"According to the provisions, the KPU-Bawaslu term of office for the 2017-2022 period will end April 11, 2022. So the inauguration of the KPU-Bawaslu period for the 2022-2027 period will be held on that same date (11 April 2022)," said the jury in his statement, Thursday, March 17.

The jury also ensured that preparations for the 2024 election would not be disrupted by the process of changing KPU and Bawaslu commissioners.

According to him, KPU and Bawaslu are large and permanent organizations, and are supported by a complete secretarial team at every level, starting from the central and regional levels.

"So that whenever a change occurs, it will not interfere with the performance of the 2024 election organizers themselves," said the jury.

After being sworn in, said the jury, the commissioners of the new KPU and Bawaslu will continue the program plans that will be drawn up, namely carrying out the 2024 Simultaneous General Elections and Regional Head Elections.

Meanwhile, Commission II of the House of Representatives (DPR) has scheduled a Hearing Meeting (RDP) with KPU-Bawaslu to evaluate the implementation of the 2021 Program and Budget on April 11, 2022.

For information, the DPR has appointed 7 KPU commissioners and 5 Bawaslu members for the 2022-2027 period, last February.

Seven names have been appointed as KPU commissioners, namely, Betty Epsilon Idrus, Hasyim Asyari, Muhammad Afifudin, Parsadaan Harahap, Yulianto Sudrajat, Idham Holik, and August Mellaz. Meanwhile, five Bawaslu members were elected, Lolly Suhenty, Puadi, Rahmat Bagja, Totok Hariyono, and Herwyn Jefler Hielsa Malonda.
