One Month Of Wiyanto Halim's Death: Family Still Not Relieved Because Police Haven't Shown CCTV Recording Victim From Departure Team

JAKARTA – The death of Wiyanto Halim, an elderly who died after being beaten in the Pulogadung Industrial Estate, East Jakarta, is still a puzzle for the bereaved family. This is because the family feels that Wiyanto is not the person he was accused of. Bryna, daughter of Wiyanto Halim, felt that there was something odd about her father's death.

Bryna recounted, on January 19 (before the beating incident) she found out that her father had received a call. At that time, said Bryna, there were eyewitnesses who saw that Wiyanto looked angry on the phone.

"Essentially he (the witness) heard (my father) say 'why are you following me all the time' while in an angry tone. That means it's been a lot, it's January 19. My dad died on January 22," Bryna told VOI, Tuesday, February 22.

Bryna also tried to match the witness's statement by checking the data and the duration of her father's incoming call at the same time the witness heard.

"Who's my father calling? On January 22, at half-past six in the afternoon, he went to meet someone. I also asked that person to be a witness. Papa should be on the way home. Because so far he has never go after nine o'clock at night. Now, from half-past six until one o'clock the whereabouts of my papa is unknown," said Bryna.

Until finally, the family got the news that Wiyanto Halim had died, Bryna received information that her father was involved in a conflict with a motorcyclist, was beaten, and died. A number of reports said that in the middle of the road Wiyanto Halim, who was driving a metallic gray Toyota Rush with police number B 1859 SYL, hit a motorbike.

"We (family and lawyers) thought it might be chased, my papa nudged me. (car) My papa couldn't be stopped, finally, many provocateurs called thieves to stop my papa. So that's just weird. until 1 o'clock where is it?" Bryna hoped.

Bryna admitted that she and her family kept asking the police about the CCTV footage. However, Bryna said, the police admitted that they had difficulty finding CCTV from the last victim who arrived in Cipinang, East Jakarta.

"Because CCTV is for housing 1x24 hours and if it's for 2x24 hours on the road, that's what the Head of the East Jakarta Police said yesterday. He said CCTV was difficult," said Bryna.

Bryna hopes that the Police will trace the CCTV footage from the time her parent left the house until the unfortunate incident occurred.

"I don't want it to stop there (the investigation). I want to know my Papa's CCTV, that's important," she said.

From the VOI news report that aired on January 25, 2022, the East Jakarta Metro Police Criminal Investigation Unit (Satreskrim) has named five suspects in this case. The determination of the suspect was reinforced by a statement by the Head of Public Relations of the Metro Jaya Police, Grand Commissioner Pol Endra Zulpan.

"We will continue to develop further regarding other perpetrators. Because based on the CCTV footage that was owned at the time of the beating on the victim, it was possible that more than five people were involved," said Grand Commissioner Zulpan to VOI at the East Jakarta Police Headquarters, Tuesday, January 25.

As is known, the victim Wiyanto Halim was beaten to death by a mob on Pulo Kambing Raya street, Pulogadung Industrial Estate, Sunday at around 02.00 western Indonesia time. Wiyanto was shouted at by thieves and the mob chased him until he was beaten and then killed. Whereas according to the police statement, Wiyanto Halim was not a thief, the elderly was actually the owner of the car he was driving.

Until now, the police have named 9 suspects involved in the death of Wiyanto Halim. The suspects were charged with Articles 160 and 170 paragraphs 1 and 2 of Juncto Article 55 of the Criminal Code, concerning incitement and persecution.
