KUPANG - The Tenau-Kupang Maritime Meteorology Station, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has appealed to fishermen in East Nusa Tenggara to be aware of sea waves with a height of up to 2.5 meters that could potentially occur in some waters in the area.

"Sea waves with a height of up to 2.5 meters have the potential to occur on February 3-5 2022, so fishing boats need to be wary of," said Head of the BMKG's Matirim Tenau-Kupang Meteorological Station Syaeful Hadi in Kupang, Wednesday.

He said this was related to the weather conditions in the waters of NTT and its surroundings and the threat it poses to the activities of fishermen.

He mentioned the potential for high waves to occur in several waters including northern Flores, Sumba Strait, Sawu Sea, Alor-Pantar Strait, Ombai Strait, Kupang-Rote, Indian Ocean south of Kupang-Rote, and Wetar Strait.

He explained that the waves with the medium category (1.25-2.5 meters) need to be watched out for because they pose a high risk to fishing boats and barges.

The maximum wave potential, he said, could even reach twice the wave height.

Syaeful explained that generally the waters of NTT have the potential for medium waves. High category waves (2.5-4 meters) have the potential to occur in the Indian Ocean south of Sumba-Sabu.

Based on synoptic analysis shows that generally, the wind blows from the southwest to the northwest at a speed of 2-6 on the Beaufort Scale.
