Amid The Drama, OpenAI Releases Free ChatGPT Voice For All Users

JAKARTA - In the midst of the company's drama after sacking Sam Altman last Friday, OpenAI decided to roll out ChatGPT Voice capabilities for free, to all users.

First launched in September, ChatGPT Voice and Image were originally only accessible to Plus and Company users for two weeks. Now, the company is keeping its promise to release it for free to the public.

ChatGPT Voice is now available to all free users. Download the app on your phone and tap the headphones icon to start the conversation," the company wrote in its announcement on X.

With ChatGPT Voice, you can now use voice to have back and forth conversations with your assistant, without the need to type again.

This new voice capability is supported by a newtext-to-speech model, which is capable of producing human-like audio only from text and instances of words for a few seconds, the company wrote last September.

OpenAI also collaborates with professional voicers to create each voice. They use Whisperer, the company's open source speech recognition system, to copy words you say into text.

Thus, the ChatGPT Voice feature is equipped with a voice library recorded by the voice actor. With the sample library, OpenAI is able to develop a model that brings together words and language nuances realistically.

This announcement came after OpenAI officially sacked its CEO Sam Altman from the company. Sam Altman and Greg Brockman were finally recruited by Microsoft as Microsoft's new AI research team.
