PLN Together With 5 World Companies Agree On National Green Electricity Development
TANGERANG - PT PLN (Persero) continues to expand its collaboration at the global level in order to accelerate the energy transition. In the 2023 Asian Enlit event, PLN signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with five leading world energy companies for the development of a green ecosystem in the country.
The five companies are PT Hitachi Sakti Energy Indonesia, Electricite de France SA (EDF), GE Vernova, The Danish Energy Agency and China Southern Power Grid International (HK) Co., Ltd. Through collaboration with these five companies, PLN will gain support in carrying out the energy transition to achieve net zero emissions in 2060.
PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo said, in order to deal with the climate change crisis, the global energy community must unite. Thus, the challenges of the energy transition that arise in various fields ranging from technological innovation, investment and policies can be addressed immediately.
"With this collaboration, we will not only be able to map out every challenge that exists, but also be able to overcome every such challenge. So, a big mission of energy transition can be realized," said Darmawan in a written statement, Saturday, November 18.
Various efforts to achieve this big mission can be seen from the MoU managed by PLN with these 5 companies. Such as the MoU PLN with HK in exploring long-term partnership opportunities for the development of the High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC), pumped storage, inter-island interconnections, to smart grids.
Meanwhile, the MoU of PLN with EDF, GE Vernova, and The Danish Energy Agency will cover the joint study through exchange of information in various ways to support the energy transition in Indonesia.
These collaborations are in line with the company's identification of the challenge of mismatching new renewable energy sources (EBT) which are isolated by electricity demand centers in urban areas.
"We have identified a mismatch between the huge potential of EBT and the demand center (electric). We are in the process of designing a green enabling transmission line to facilitate it," added Darmawan.

The next challenge comes from intermittent EBT electricity, fluctuating by weather changes. In this case, PLN is ready to build a smart grid equipped with flexible generation, smart transmission, smart distribution, to smart meters.
To make all these efforts a success, PLN has designed an Accelerated Renewable Energy Development (ARED). Through ARED, the development of a green enabling transmission line and smart grid will continue to be encouraged to strengthen the green electricity supply system in Indonesia.
"Can PLN do it alone? The answer is no. This is a global challenge, we have to overcome it in an integrated way. The global community must unite to overcome the challenges of climate change," concluded Darmawan.
