Europe's Largest Car Assembly Plant In The Past Will Become A Green Campus
JAKARTA - The parent of many car manufacturers, Stellantis, will invest up to 200 million euros or IDR 3.2 trillion to make the Mirafiori assembly plant in Italy part of the 'green campus' program.
Mirafiori is located in Turin and will become one of Stellantis' main locations besides Poissy in France and Russelsheim in Germany in a plan section to turn Stellantis' main facility into a carbon-neutral assembly plant, both for the design, research and development, as well as the company's main functions.
The Mirafiori plant in Italy is the largest industrial complex as well as the oldest car factory in Europe that is still operating today. The factory has an area of 2,000,000 m2 and is equipped with 20 kilometers of railway lines and 11 kilometers of underground roads connecting various warehouses.
In 2011, the factory could produce around 210 GWhs of electricity independently. Currently, the plant accommodates about 18,000 employees and in 2012 produces around 41,600 cars, including luxury SUV Maserati Levante, sports sedan Maserati Ghibli, and luxury sedan Maserati Quattroporte.
For more than 80 years since its inauguration, the Mirafiori plant has produced more than 35 types of cars and 28.7 million vehicles.
"We are reconsidering our iconic building to be more responsive to our new hybrid way of working, as a large number of our co-workers take advantage of the flexibility of remote work, while also contributing to reducing the company's carbon footprint," Xavier Chéreau, Head of Human Resources & Stellantis Transformation to Reuters, July 3.
The Mirafiori project will be completed in 2025 and will be able to accommodate at least 10,000 Stellantis workers.

It is known, last year Stellantis announced investment in Mirafiori to increase the production of electrified double transmission (eDCT) and make the plant the company's group's main hub for the 'circular economy' business, which focuses on repair and destruction of vehicles and reuse of their components.
Production in Mirafiori will also be for the assembly of the Fiat 500 electric small car, one of Stellantis' best-selling products in Europe.
