Gregoria Mariska Ambitious To Set A Bad Record Against Tai Tzu Ying

JAKARTA Indonesian women's singles, Gregoria Mariska Tunjung, has ambitions to end her bad record against Tai Tzu Ying when the two faced off in the second round of the Singapore Open 2023, Thursday, June 8.

Gregoria successfully passed the first round of the BWF Super 750 event dramatically after defeating United States representative Beiwen Zhang in three games 21-11, 17-21, 21-16 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, Wednesday, June 7, 2023.

In the second half tomorrow Gregoria will also face former world number one Tai Tzu Ying for the eighth time in his career. The Chinese Taipei representative qualified for the second half after stopping Danish women's singles Line Christophersen.

"Facing Tai Tzu Ying in the second half is certainly a matter of pride. I will fight players who consistently rank above the world and at the same time idol," said Gregoria in a statement received.

Facing the third seed in this tournament is definitely not an easy job for Gregoria. Especially in their previous seven meetings, the 2017 junior world champion has not succeeded in defeating Tai Tzu Ying once.

The series of defeats suffered by Gregoria began from the 2017 Indonesia Open to the 2021 Thailand Open. Five other defeats between the two competitions were at the 2019 Sudirman Cup, 2019 Japan Open, 2019 Korea Open, 2019 China Open, and 2020 All England.

"I certainly have to be ready and want to show the best later. He has so many advantages, not only the technique but also experience and achievement. I will perform my best and try my best," said Gregoria.

Gregoria herself has not been so satisfied with her performances in the first half. He admits he still made many mistakes against Beiwen Zhang and doesn't need to be repeated if he wants to stop Tai Tzu Ying.

"I haven't performed too much. Even so, in the future, I have to know what to change, especially the pattern of play because I was still wasting a lot of points," he said.

Gregoria is in a convincing performance in recent tournaments. The 23-year-old badminton player managed to reach two finals in the last two BWF Tur events and managed to win one of them

Gregoria got the title at Madrid Masters. Meanwhile, another tournament he managed to end as runner-up was the Malaysia Masters at the end of last May, where he lost to the world number one from Japan Akane Yamaguchi.
