EU Affirms Technology Companies Must Label Generative AI Content Potentially Disinformation
JAKARTA- Companies that use AI-generative tools such as ChatGPT and Bard that have the potential to generate disinformation should label the content as part of their efforts to counter fake news. This was said by the Deputy Head of the European Commission, Vera Jourova, on Monday, June 5.
Introduced late last year, Microsoft-backed ChatGPT has become the fastest growing consumer app in history and sparked competition among technology companies to bring genrative AI products to market.
However, concerns are growing regarding the misuse of this technology and it is likely that malicious actors and even the government can use it to generate much more disinformation than ever before.
"The parties who integrate AI's generative into their services such as Bingchat for Microsoft, Bard for Google should build the necessary protection so that this service cannot be used by malicious actors to generate disinformation," Jourova told a news conference.

"Those who have services with the potential to spread the disinformation generated by AI should provide technology to recognize this kind of content and label users clearly," he said.
According to Jourova, companies such as Google, Microsoft, and Meta Platforms that have signed up for the EU Practice Code to address disinformation are expected to report protective measures taken to address this in July.
He also warned Twitter, which came out of the code last week, to be ready to face more regulatory scrutiny.
"By leaving the Code, Twitter has attracted a lot of attention, and its actions and compliance with EU law will be closely and urgently examined," said Jourova.
