2023 Asian Badminton Championships: Four Indonesian Representatives Also Hold Tickets To Quarter Finals, One Single And 3 Doubles
JAKARTA - Women's singles Gregoria Mariska Tunjung successfully defeated her compatriot Komang Ayu Cahya Dewi to reach the quarter-finals of the 2023 Badminton Asia Championship (BAC).
Gregoria qualified after a dramatic three-game win 15-21, 21-13, and 21-18 at Sheikh Rashid Bin Hamdan Indoor Hall, Al Nasr Club, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Thursday, April 27, 2023.
In the next round, Gregoria will face the winner of the third seed from China Chen Yufei against Japan's representative, Aya Ohori. The two representatives have not played when this news was written.
Apart from Gregoria, Praveen Jordan/Melati Daeva Oktavianti also got tickets for the quarter-finals. The pair went to the top eight after defeating the Malaysian pair, Chen Tang Jie/Toh Ee Wei, three games 23-21, 18-21, and 21-15.
"This is our first meeting and like Melati said two days ago, their coach was our former coach, so at least they have capital. In the first game we tried to keep getting out of their pressure when they were left behind, finally in the final points we could turn things around," said Praveen.
"This Malaysian couple has good potential. The female player is still young but has been brave while his son has good power, so we really shouldn't be careless," he added.
In the quarter-finals, Praveen/Melati will face more serious challenges. They will face the first seed from China, Zheng Siwei/Huang Yaqiong.
"We look forward to their opponents to be an illustration of the extent we are left behind," said Praveen, who have so far lost nine times to 11 clashes with Huang/Zheng.
Meanwhile, Dejan Ferdinansyah/Gloria Emanuelle Widjaja also stepped into the quarter-finals. The doubles from PB Djarum beat Supak Jomkoh/Supissara Paewsampran with a score of 21-18, 17-21, and 22-20.
From the men's doubles sector, Bagas Maulana/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri escaped the needle. They managed to get up after being left behind by the fifth seed, Liu Yu Chen/Ou Xuan Yi.
Bagas/Fikri had trailed 21-23 from the Chinese doubles in the first game. However, they got up and won the next two games with a 21-17 and 22-20 wins.
Prior to these four representatives, Indonesia had secured tickets for the quarter-finals through the mixed doubles Rinov Rivaldy/Pitha Haningtyas Mentari and women's doubles Febriana Dwi Puji Kusuma/Amalia Cahaya Pratiwi.
