For The First Time After 15 Years, Chinese Brands Can Superior In Their Own Country
JAKARTA - Many do not know that Volkswagen is the most preferred and most widely purchased car in China over the past 15 years. But for the first quarter of this year not in effect, BYD has become China's most popular brand with 440,000 units sold.
Meanwhile, Volkswagen sold only 427,247 cars in China during the first quarter. And only 6 percent of them are electric cars. The above sales figures from automotive industry data collected by Bloomberg and reported on Wednesday, April 26.
Previously, the electric vehicle manufacturer, backed by Warren Buffett, had also warned through their CEO Wang Chuanfu when he said he had ambitions to overtake Volkswagen by the end of 2023.
In response to this, Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume previously also said on the Shanghai Auto Show earlier in the month that competitions with BYD would be very tight.
"BYD is very strong. But in the end it's not about volume. We want a successful business, and more importantly being the best international group in China," Blume said.
BYD has sold 1.86 million units of vehicles in 2022. The manufacturer now accounts for two of the five electric vehicles sold in China in the first quarter.
