Wow, the Appearance of Google Maps is Now More Immersive with AR Technology
JAKARTA - During the live broadcast of Google: Live from Paris on Wednesday, February 8, the search giant announced several updates for its Google Maps product.
As a realization of Google's vision for the future of Google Maps in delivering immersive and intuitive maps, the company demonstrated how finally their artificial intelligence (AI) can make that vision a reality.
Some of the updates on Google Maps are as follows:
Immersive view
Using advances in Google's AI technology, immersive views now combine billions of Street View and aerial images to display a digital model of the place, plus information regarding weather, traffic and how busy a place is.
For example, using Google's AI neural radiance fields (NeRF) technology, if you search for the Tower of London on Google Maps, you'll get an aerial view of the building, which makes it appear as if you're floating above it. More than that, you can also see what the area is like at different times of the day and what the weather is like.
"With NeRF, we can accurately recreate the full context of a place including its lighting, material textures, and what's in the background," said Google VP & General Manager, Geo Chris Phillips.
Unfortunately, the new immersive view starts rolling out today in London, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Tokyo. In the coming months, it will be launched also in Amsterdam, Dublin, Florence and Venice.

Navigation with Augmented Reality (AR)
By simply taking a photo of the place around you and doing a search with Live View Maps, AI and augmented reality technology will now help you find details about the place such as when the place is open, whether it's busy at the moment, and how highly the place is rated.
The Google Maps feature is rolling out in London, Los Angeles, New York, Paris, San Francisco and Tokyo. In the coming months, the feature will be expanded to Barcelona, Dublin and Madrid.
