ChatGPT Breaks Growth Records on the Internet, 100 Million Users In Just Two Months

JAKARTA - ChatGPT, the popular chatbot from OpenAI, is estimated to have reached 100 million monthly active users in January, or just two months after its launch. According to a UBS study on Wednesday, February 1, this makes it the fastest growing consumer app in history,

The report, citing data from analytics firm Similar Web, says around 13 million unique visitors used ChatGPT per day in January, more than double the level in December.

"In the 20 years since the internet space emerged, we can't recall a faster increase in consumer internet applications," UBS analysts wrote in the note.

Similar Web did not immediately respond to a request to confirm the figure. OpenAI, a private company backed by Microsoft Corp, launched ChatGPT in late November.

According to data from Sensor Tower, it took TikTok about nine months after its global launch to add 100 million users and Instagram took 2-1/2 years to reach that number.

ChatGPT is currently free to use. The company on Thursday February 2 also launched a $20 per month subscription feature that provides a more stable and faster service and the opportunity to try out new features first.

Analysts believe the viral launch of ChatGPT will give OpenAI a first mover advantage over other AI companies. Increasing usage, while adding significant amounts of computational costs, also provides valuable feedback to help train chatbot responses.

But the tool also raises questions about academic dishonesty and the presence of misinformation in the answers.
