JAKARTA - A human body finder dog of the type Dutch Shepherd named swallow, managed to find ten earthquake victims in Cijedil Village, Cianjur Regency, West Java, on a six-day search mission.
"So far, we have found ten victims, all of which were found based on instructions from the families of the victims," said Bripda Police Headquarters K9 Team I Gusti Agung Gede Purnama Putra in Cugenang, Monday, November 28 afternoon.
The 2.5-year-old dog was involved in a humanitarian mission with the Joint Search and Rescue Team (SAR) from elements of Basarnas, TNI and volunteers at RT3 RW1 Cijedil since Wednesday (23/11) or D+2 of the earthquake with a magnitude of 5.6 in the local area.
The team from the Search and Rescue Office together with the handler divide the landslide area into two points, each covering an area of 100x50 meters.
The dog with a strong pattern of dark fur was able to distinguish the smell of the carcass of the animal and human bodies thanks to routine exercises of detecting a similar aroma of a rotting human body. The smell is obtained from chemicals that can only be used by certified training facilities.
In each training, sniffer dogs are trained to sharpen the ability to detect human bodies that have rotted using the ampulos of these chemicals.
Walet hunts the bodies of the victims five times a day for 10 to 15 minutes.
"Walit main bisa lima kali sehari. Ini sangat meresahkan energinya di lapangan yang penuh mudur," katanya dilansir dari Antara.
Based on Basarnas reports, the total landslide victims that have been found to this day in Cijedil Village, Cugenang District reached 20 bodies out of a total report of people missing around 30 people.
The bodies were successfully evacuated on Friday (25/11) as many as eight people, Saturday (26/11) six people, Sunday (27/11) three people, and Monday (28/11) two people.
As of the eighth day after the incident or Monday, 703 people were injured as a result of the Cianjur earthquake, 73,693 people were displaced, 323 people died, and nine people were being searched.
Previously, the earthquake had a magnitude of 5.6 around 10 km southwest of Cianjur Regency, West Java on Monday (21/11) at 13.21 WIB.
The epicenter of the earthquake was on land at a depth of 10 km at coordinates 6.84 South Latitude and 107.05 East Longitude, Monday (21/11) at around 13.21 WIB.
