Blossom Together, JAFF 2022 Plays 137 Films Out Of 19 Countries

JAKARTA - The Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival (JAFF), will be held again from November 26 to December 3 with the themewasom or bermi. The 17th JAFF will feature 137 films from 19 Asian Pacific countries which will be broadcast in competition and non-competition programs.

For this 17th edition, JAFF will be held again in a hybrid manner. The offline screening will be held again at Empire XXI Yogyakarta, while online playback will be carried out in collaboration with KlikFilm.

"We decided on aMBAssom theme considering that age 17 is the most iconic age. This symbolizes the emergence of new innovations in artistic production and exploration modes, as well as new talents in the Asian cinema landscape, even in the midst of a pandemic that is still hitting," said JAFF 2022 Festival Director Ifa Isfansyah in a virtual press conference, Thursday, November 17.

There are 13 feature films selected in the Main Competition program, which will compete for the Golden and Silver Hanoman Awards. In the Light of Asia short film competition, 9 films will compete for the Blencong Awards. JAFF will also give awards to the directors who produced the first feature films and both in the NETPAC Awards competition.

In addition, as many as 11 Indonesian films that will air this year will compete in the JAFF Indonesian Screen Awards to compete for Best Film awards, Best Directors, Best Screenwriters, Best Actors, and Best Cinematography.

In the non-competition program, JAFF will present the selection of the best films in Asia Pacific. A total of 12 feature films from 10 countries and 12 short films from 5 countries will be shown in the Asian Perspectives program; 5 Indonesian feature films in the Indonesian Film Showcase program; and 10 Indonesian short films from new directors in the Emerging program.

JAFF will also feature a compilation of 5 short football-themed films with the title Football for All in the Community Screen program; compilation of 8 short films from female directors in the Community Forum program; as well as compilation of 10 short films in the Kompro Screen of Indonesian.

Still in the non-competition program, the 17th JAFF will hold a Bisik Cinema showing the film Negeri-Ngeri Sedap, an Indonesian representative for the Best International Feature Film category at the 2023 Academy Awards.

The festival will also screen the premiere of Indonesian films, including the Autobiography by Makbul Mubarak, Like & Share from Gina S. Noer, and Before, Now & Then (Nana) by Kamila Andini.

JAFF17 will open with the screening of Piknik Pesona, an anthology of 10 short films set in 10 cities by 10 young Indonesian directors. Meanwhile, Plan 75 by director Chie Hayakawa, who represented Japan at the Oscars 2023, closed the festival.
