JAKARTA - British Prime Minister Liz Truss announced her resignation just six weeks after being sworn in, the impact of an economic program that shocked financial markets and divided the Conservative Party, on Thursday.
With the announcement of his resignation, Truss became the shortest prime minister in British history, only 45 days in office.
Not only that, Truss' 45-day term was also shorter than the time she spent participating in the Conservative Party Leadership election as well as the position of British Prime Minister, which began on July 13 and ended on September 5 or 55 days.
"I admit, given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate I chose by the Conservative Party. Therefore, I have spoken to His Majesty Raja to inform him that I have resigned as leader of the Conservative Party," he said.
Apart from Truss, a number of British prime ministers were also recorded as serving less than a year with various reasons. These include:
1. George Canning
His tenure as prime minister only lasted 118 days before he died on August 8, 1827, at the age of 57. It is likely due to pneumonia or tuberculosis.
2. Viscount Goderich
Goderich, whose real name is Frederick Robinson, became prime minister replacing Canning. He struggled. However, as the king's trust faded, he resigned in January 1828, when his term of office entered the fifth month, exactly 143 days.
3. Andrew Bonar Law
In charge of the prime minister's position for 209 days, Law was forced to resign in May 1923 as cancer worsened and made it difficult for him to speak in parliament. This Conservative politician died less than six months later.
4. Duke of Palangshire
