Mount Awu Sangihe Sulut Still Has Alert Status

SANGIHE - Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Sangihe Islands Regency, Wandu Labesi, said Mount Awu was still on alert (Level III) based on the level of volcanic activity.

"Until now, Mount Awu is still on standby, Level III, but community activities are still running normally", he said in Tahuna, Sangihe Islands, North Sulawesi, as reported by Antara, Friday, July 8.

He said that on Friday the volcano was reported to have experienced one shallow volcanic earthquake with an amplitude of 3 mm for 5 seconds and two distant tectonic earthquakes with an amplitude of 2-20 mm for 40 to 85 seconds.

"People are still prohibited from doing activities within a radius of 3.5 kilometers from the crater of Mount Awu", he said.

The status of Mount Awu has been raised from Level II (Alert) to Level III (Alert) since May 11, 2022.

At the Level III activity level, the public and visitors/tourists are not allowed to approach and operate within a 3.5 km radius from the crater of the summit of Mount Awu and follow the directions of the local Regional Disaster Management Agency.
