JAKARTA - Realme announced a major revision to its software update policy for the Realme 16 Pro line, extending support for about 2032. This step strengthens the company's position in the increasingly competitive mid-segment, where software durability is now as important as hardware specifications.
In its latest statement, Realme confirmed that the Realme 16 Pro and Realme 16 Pro+ will receive four Android operating system updates and six years of security updates. At the initial launch, the company only promised three Android updates and four years of security patches.
Both devices were launched with Android 16-based Realme UI 7. With the new policy, the series is expected to receive updates up to Android 20, while security patches will continue to roll out until around 2032.
This change is not a single decision. Realme previously also extended the support period for several models in the Realme 14 series, Realme 15, as well as the Realme P4 line and part of the Realme P3.
This trend indicates a shift in the company's strategy towards a more aggressive long-term commitment, approaching standards already implemented by a number of competitors in the middle and premium classes.
In the global market, long software support has become the main purchase factor. Consumers now not only look at 200 megapixel cameras or jumbo batteries, but also calculate how long the phone remains relevant in terms of security and features.
In that context, Realme's decision to extend the life cycle of its products is seen as a response to market pressures as well as an effort to strengthen its premium image.
In terms of specifications, the Realme 16 Pro carries an AMOLED 6.78-inch screen with a 1,500 resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. The Pro+ variant is slightly larger with a 6.8-inch panel. Both are equipped with a 50-megapixel front camera and a 200-megapixel main camera with optical image stabilization (OIS). The Pro+ variant adds a 50-megapixel periscope telephoto camera with 3.5x optical zoom.
The main difference lies in the engine. The 16 Pro is powered by the Dimensity 8100-MAX chipset, while the Pro+ uses the Snapdragon 7 Gen 4. Both are supported by a 7,000mAh battery with 80W fast charging.
With the price having adjusted to a more premium level, the additional two years of security support and an extra generation of Android become a significant selling point. In an era when the cycle of replacing a phone is getting longer, the commitment to updates can be a decisive differentiator.
The competition is now not just about who has the biggest sensor or the fastest charging. It's about who is willing to take the longest responsibility for the device that has been sold. And in the digital economy, the life of the software is often more decisive than the life of the battery.
