Had Accused Violating Patents, Strava Cancels Lawsuit To Garmin

JAKARTA Strava, a sports activity tracking app, dropped its lawsuit against Garmin. This cancellation comes about 21 days after Strava filed his case in court.

In early October, Strava accused Garmin of violating patents. Specifically, Strava accused Garmin of violating the two core features they patented, namely the Segment feature to compare time on different routes and the Hot Map feature.

Unlike the Segment, the heat map is a visual representation that displays the location of the various activities most often carried out by users. When filing a lawsuit, Strava requested a permanent court decision.

Basically, this lawsuit was filed to stop Garmin from selling the various products that have two features. According to Strava, compensation in the form of money will not be able to cover the losses they suffered.

With the severity of this lawsuit, the cancellation of the lawsuit is certainly a surprising decision. Until this news was made, Strava did not make any statement regarding the reasons behind the decision.

However, there has been speculation from various circles, one of which is Industrial Analyst Ray Maker, from YouTube DC Rainmaker. He stated that this lawsuit was most likely canceled because Strava did not have the power from the start.

It should be noted that Garmin is Strava's closest partner as well as the biggest source of revenue. If Strava continues the lawsuit, Garmin can cut ties and this has the potential to cause Strava to go out of business.

This fact is reinforced by Garmin's quick steps in establishing a new partnership with Komooot, one of Strava's main competitors. DC Rainmaker also emphasizes Garmin's proven strong track record in dealing with patent lawsuits over the years.
