JAKARTA - Samsung is reportedly getting closer to launching its first trifold device, most likely to be named the Galaxy G Fold. Although it will only be officially present in the next few months, this device has already attracted attention, including due to the news that its charging speed is relatively slow.

This device has just passed 3C certification in China, an agency equivalent to the FCC in the United States. In the certification document, it is stated that the device only supports charging up to 25W quite a disappointing figure for premium class phones, especially with an estimated price exceeding US$3,000 (around Rp49 million).

The 25W charging speed is actually not surprising if you look at Samsung's track record. Although some competitors like Huawei Mate XT are able to reach up to 66W, they usually use USB-A ports with special chargers. While Samsung remains consistent with USB-C, which is more universal but has a lower charging speed limit.

In comparison, OnePlus is only able to charge up to 17W via USB-C. In fact, some medium series Samsung devices such as Galaxy A are able to reach 45W. Then, why is the trifold only 25W? One possibility is that it is due to the use of three separate batteries in one device, which can limit the flow of power for technical and security reasons.

Fantastic Prices, New Technology

This device is expected to be sold for between 3,000 and 3,500 US dollars (around Rp.49 million Rp. 57 million). This price is considered reasonable considering that the Galaxy Z Fold 6 alone has been sold for 1,900 US dollars, and the Galaxy G Fold will bring higher complexity with two hinges and three screen panels.

Samsung first teased the public with this trifold concept during the Unpacked event in January 2025. Although it did not provide much detail, the presence of the teaser confirmed that the South Korean tech giant is seriously working on a new category in the folding device line.

Huawei caught the eye last year when introducing their trifolds, which solved one of the drawbacks of the foldable style of the book: an awkward screen ratio. With a tri-fold design, the screen can be fully opened into tablet shapes with a ratio approaching 16:10 or 16:9 much more convenient than the 1:1,2 ratio on traditional foldables.

The Samsung Galaxy G Fold is expected to be released in the third quarter of this year, possibly after the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6 scheduled for July. This means that the Galaxy G Fold may get its own stage to make it more prominent.

Will the Galaxy G Fold be the next big leap in a foldable world, or is it just an expensive gimmick? We'll just have to wait for a surprise from Samsung in the near future.
