OnePlus Unggul Google By Presenting An OS Update Up To Four Years

JAKARTA - OnePlus is trying to embarrass Google by offering four years of major operating system (OS) version updates and five years of security patches for some phones starting 2023.

Unfortunately, OnePlus did not reveal which phone was in line with its renewal policy. It is likely that the company will prioritize high-end phones such as the OnePlus 11 series.

OnePlus Operation System and Oppo's Head of Products, Gary Chen, confirmed that security updates will be issued every two months.

The China-based company is also teasing some of the features that come to OxygenOS 13.1 and will launch in the first half of 2023.

The OS will have always active display updates with Spotify support, AI-guided memory management to improve performance, Dolby Atmos-based spatial audio, second-generation private data space and new design language Aquamorphic.

Launching Engadget, Thursday, December 1, with this new policy, puts OnePlus on par with Samsung, which often touts a four-year increase in Android for its flagship phones.

While Google started shipping security updates for five years starting with the Pixel 6 family, but only guaranteed a new version for three years. Apple usually provides five years of major revisions to the iPhone and sometimes releases important security fixes for older models.

By offering a year more complete Android updates with regular patching for up to five years, OnePlus is at least making efforts to calm its users' complaints.
