JAKARTA - Oppo has partnered with Ericsson to drive the development and advancement of 5G technology. The move comes to fill a void in the smartphone industry left by Huawei, which has been blacklisted in the United States.

In partnership with Ericsson, Oppo also recently revealed an upgraded communications laboratory in Shenzhen, China. Later, this laboratory will be responsible for carrying out 5G research and development activities, which include protocol updates and regional tuning to test upcoming smartphones.

Furthermore, the laboratory will also focus on exploring potential competitors, developing applications that can fully realize the promise of 5G mobile technology, while improving the user experience in terms of power consumption.

Oppo's vice president and general manager of product strategy and collaboration, Chris Shu, said Oppo will rely on its own software capabilities to drive new developments in 5G mobile technology even though some of the lab equipment is sourced overseas.

“A lot of equipment goes in without a code. A box is meaningless unless we develop the technology in it, so that we can explore the most up-to-date technology," Shu said as quoted by Gizmochina, Friday, September 24.

Currently, the smartphone maker is also building a new headquarters in the city. The site will consist of four planned towers. The company plans to position itself as a new force in Shenzhen, known as China's Silicon Valley which has long been home to Huawei.

Oppo's push for 5G development comes at a time when rival Huawei has struggled with the impact of US sanctions. While Huawei was once a major competitor in the smartphone market, its presence has dropped drastically due to the blacklist effect.

Now, the brand faces tougher restrictions when it comes to sourcing other materials and technologies, which would be the perfect opportunity for Oppo to seize the market.
