Robo IONIQ 5, Autonomous Taxi From Hyundai Will Launch

JAKARTA - Hyundai Motor Group and Motion, a Hyundai-Aptiv joint venture, have jointly developed the IONIQ 5 robo-taxi. This Level 4 autonomous driving system vehicle will reportedly be used as a taxi in South Korea and the US, as reported by Yonhap, Wednesday, September 1.

The prototype of the IONIQ 5 autonomous robo-taxi is planned to be unveiled at the exhibition at IAA Mobility 2021 in Munich next week. The company said it plans to supply its Level 4 IONIQ 5 robo-taxi to the US ride-sharing app Lyft by 2023.

Level 4 vehicles are self-driving under restricted conditions and will not operate if all required conditions are not met. At Level 5, the vehicle's auto-driving feature can drive in any condition.

Hyundai Motor Co. and US mobility startup Aptiv formed a USD 4 billion 50:50 joint venture in March 2020 to seek synergies in future mobility solutions.

In February, the maker of the Sonata sedan and Palisade SUV unveiled the all-electric IONIQ5 model embedded with the group's EV-only global-electric modular (E-GMP) platform, in line with rival automakers' electrification push.
