JAKARTA - Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang met with the heads of two major South Korean game companies, Krafton and NCSOFT, on Sunday. The meeting not only discussed games, but also opportunities for cooperation in artificial intelligence or AI.
Quoted from a Yonhap report, Sunday, June 7, the meeting took place on the third day of Huang's four-day visit to South Korea. He visited a number of internet cafes in southern Seoul and met separately with Krafton Executive Director Chang Byung-gyu and NCSOFT CEO Kim Taek-jin.
Huang and Kim appeared in front of fans. The atmosphere became noisy when Huang mentioned Aion 2, NCSOFT's new game that is being prepared.
"Who is the best?" asked Huang. Fans immediately cheered.
NCSOFT also held a user event attended by the main developer of Aion 2. The company outlined the development direction and plans for updating the game.
Previously, Huang stopped by another internet cafe near the location. There, he met Krafton's Chief AI Officer Lee Kang-wook and the head of the popular game PUBG: Battlegrounds.
Both parties reportedly discussed cooperation opportunities related to RTX Spark, Nvidia's platform for premium Windows laptops, as well as physical AI technology. Physical AI refers to AI technology used in the real world, such as robots, machines, or devices that can move and respond to the environment.
Krafton is getting serious about entering the field. Earlier this year, the company established a robotics subsidiary, Ludo Robotics, as part of its push into AI-based robotics.
According to Yonhap, since arriving in South Korea on Friday, Huang has been actively approaching the gaming community. On the first day, he met with members of the T1 e-sports team, including star player Faker.
Huang's move is interesting. Nvidia was born big from graphics cards for games. Now its chips are the backbone of the generative AI explosion. Therefore, a visit to the Korean gaming community cannot be read as a normal friendly event.
Huang also had a meal at a famous Korean noodle restaurant in central Seoul with Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung.
On Sunday, Huang made the first pitch before a Doosan Bears baseball game at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul. Nvidia has been closely collaborating with the Doosan Group in the AI sector, especially through Doosan Robotics Inc.
Afterwards, Huang visited a fried chicken restaurant in southern Seoul for a chimaek meeting with SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won and a number of executives, including SK hynix CEO Kwak Noh-jung. Chimaek is a Korean term for enjoying fried chicken with beer.
Such meetings are not new for Huang. In October, he also held a similar meeting with Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong and Euisun Chung of Hyundai Motor Group.
SK hynix has an important position for Nvidia. The company is a major supplier of high-bandwidth memory or HBM. HBM is a high-performance memory chip that is an important component in Nvidia's GPUs to run generative AI systems.
The series of meetings showed South Korea's strategic position for Nvidia, especially in the gaming, AI, robotics, automotive, and memory chip sectors.
