Apple is preparing to open a new round of monetization of its services. Starting in summer 2026, the Cupertino-based technology company will display ads in the Apple Maps app, marking a major change in the user experience of the navigation service.

Signs of the launch of the ad have appeared in the iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5 beta versions. In the update, Apple set up an ad infrastructure, including a special opening screen related to ads and internal code that supports the promotion system in Maps.

Even though the ad has not been fully active, the technical foundation has been embedded.

Ads Appear in Search and Recommendation Features

Apple explained that the ads will appear in the Apple Maps search interface. When users search for a specific location or category, relevant sponsored results will appear at the top.

This system is similar to the advertising mechanism on the App Store, where businesses can bid on certain keywords so that their promotions appear first.

In addition to search, Apple also presents a new feature called Suggested Places.

This feature will provide recommendations based on locations that are popular around the user as well as previous search history. This is where the ads will also appear.

In other words, businesses are not only competing in search results, but also in the personal recommendation space that is closer to user decisions.

Apple insists that all ads will be labeled "Ad" so that they can be clearly distinguished from organic results. However, there will be no option for users to disable the ads.

Like the ad in the App Store, this system will be applied automatically to all users in supported regions.

Launched in phases, focus initially on US and Canada

In the initial stage, ads on Apple Maps will only be available in the United States and Canada. The launch is for iPhone and iPad users, with possible expansion to other countries in the future.

Apple has not given a firm date, only saying the launch will take place in "summer". In the northern hemisphere, the period runs from June 21 to September 22.

Since iOS 26.5 is expected to launch in late May or early June, it's possible that ads will start to be active at the same time or shortly after the update. On the privacy side, Apple is trying to maintain its image.

The company states that user location as well as interactions with ads in Maps will not be associated with Apple Accounts, and the data is not shared with third parties.

The statement is important because location-based monetization often raises concerns about user tracking.

The inclusion of ads into Apple Maps shows that Apple is getting more serious about optimizing its service business line, amid slowing hardware growth.
