JAKARTA - The X platform announced that they would permanently close the Community feature. This feature closure will take effect on May 6.

This decision was made after the company found that the Community feature was more abused for negative activities. According to X's Head of Product, Nikita Bier, the usage rate of this feature is very low and not commensurate with the burden of its management.

"The community has a great vision, but it is only used by less than 0.4 percent of users, but contributes to 80 percent of spam and fraud reports," Bier said, quoted from his personal X account on Friday, April 24.

Bier also added that the feature is often used to spread harmful malware and financial fraud. Many groups within the Community have turned into tools to direct paid traffic to other platforms outside of X.

Therefore, X considers this feature to have failed. In fact, Bier likened the failure of this project to a cheap version of the discussion groups on competitor platforms.

Community admins have until May 30 to move their members to the new chat system. The company is giving this transition period so that active and positive communities can stay connected with each other.

As a substitute, X will focus on developing the XChat service which will stand as a standalone application. This messaging service will support public groups that can accommodate up to 500 members.

The capacity of members in the group chat is targeted to increase to 1,000 people in the next few weeks. Even though the Community is closed, X emphasizes that they remain committed to building a community space that is free from spam and fake accounts.
