JAKARTA - YouTube has launched a feature that allows users to create avatars with their appearance and voice in Shorts. This feature is supported by Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology on the platform.

To create the avatar, users must take a direct selfie as a form of facial recording from various angles. They will also be asked to read some instructions so that AI can process their voice.

From the images and sounds taken by AI, the platform will generate photorealistic avatars that are ready to be used for various video scenarios. Each video clip produced by this AI avatar has a duration of up to 8 seconds for one command.

Even though the duration is limited, creators can make several clips in a row to create a video with a longer narrative. Creators only need to submit commands about what the avatar should say to Gemini on YouTube Create.

As a form of transparency, every video that uses this technology will be equipped with a watermark such as SynthID. This step is taken to ensure viewers can distinguish between original content and content generated by AI.

YouTube guarantees that the facial and voice biometric data they take is only used for the creation of personal avatars. All of this data will not be accessible and misused by others for the creation of Shorts content.

YouTube also allows account owners to delete their digital avatars at any time. Later, the Google system will automatically delete avatar data if users do not use it for three years.

Currently, the feature is available worldwide, except in the European region. Only users aged 18 and over with an active channel can use the new feature.
