Don't Make Burnout an Excuse for Nakes to Bully Patients

JAKARTA - The Indonesian Doctors Association (IDI) said burnout was not an excuse for health workers and medical personnel to behave badly to patients, responding to the comments of nirempati alias verbal bullying on social media from health workers to a BPJS Health patient.

The Deputy Chairman of the IDI Wiweka General Board said that based on Article 21 of the Indonesian Medical Code of Ethics (KODEKI), doctors must maintain their health, both physical and mental health, including from the risk of burnout.

"Yes, maybe he is exhausted or what, but in the realm or framework of implementing health services or practicing his profession, he must be able to prioritize ethics. That is not justified," he said as reported by ANTARA, Thursday, August 6.

He said that being a health worker and medical personnel means upholding ethics towards patients, especially health services related to people's lives. Doctors, he said, do not promise results, but promise the best deeds.

Wiweka said that his party had coordinated with the Medical Ethics Honor Council (MKEK) for clarification, responding to the identification of 10 health workers and medical personnel who were suspected of sending the nirempatitersebut comments.

After that, training will be carried out.

Regarding sanctions, Wiweka said that sanctions were given according to the deepening. If the behavior is fraught with allegations of ethical violations, then an ethical trial is carried out.

"The penalty is also in accordance with the gradation of alleged violations. But the concept is still that we are coaching, because ethics need to be coached, repeated drills so that it can become a culture," he said.

The Indonesian Health Council said that it had identified 10 health workers and medical personnel who were suspected of commenting on a deceased National Health Insurance (JKN) participant on social media, and would conduct further investigations.

Member of the KKI Leadership, Dr. Mohammad Syahril, said that his party would conduct an investigation with professional organizations, educational institutions, health facilities, and local governments to determine the type of violation committed, whether it was a violation of ethics, professional discipline, or a violation of the law.

As the investigation progresses, he said, there is the potential to identify more health workers and medical personnel who are suspected of sending nirempati comments to the late JKN participant Yusrizal Tri Chaerawan.
